WHEN MUSIC BECOMES MINISTRY

Tangela Longstreet is a worship leader, recording artist, songwriter, producer, entrepreneur, and ministry leader committed to using her gifts to glorify God and inspire others.

She currently serves as the Minister of Music and Worship Leader at Raleigh Community Church, where she has faithfully led the music ministry for the past several years.

Her responsibilities extend beyond leading songs. Tangela prayerfully selects music that supports the pastor’s message and the church’s vision, leads rehearsals, collaborates with the media team, mentors others, visits the hospitalized, checks on senior members, and leads weekly prayer.

Music has been the foundation of her life and ministry for decades. She has traveled nationally and internationally, collaborated with gospel and secular artists, and used her voice to proclaim the goodness of God.

Beyond ministry and music, Tangela holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is the owner of Longstreet Logistics LLC, a transportation company built on integrity, excellence, and perseverance.

Her life reflects the heart of MERGE: bringing music, ministry, business, service, and personal purpose together for the glory of God.

MERGE: What drives you to get up in the morning?

Tangela Longstreet: My family is one of my greatest motivations. Knowing that they depend on me gives me the strength to keep going, even on the days when I’m not feeling my best.

I’m also grateful for every new day that God allows me to see. Each morning is a reminder that I have another opportunity to fulfill His purpose for my life, make a difference in someone else’s life, and walk in His grace.

I begin each day with a simple prayer: “God, I don’t know what I will encounter today, but I know that whatever it is, You will bring me through it.”

That faith gives me peace, confidence, and the courage to face whatever lies ahead. It reminds me that I never have to face life’s challenges alone because God is always with me.

“Each morning is a reminder that I have another opportunity to fulfill His purpose for my life, make a difference in someone else’s life, and walk in His grace.”

RECOGNIZING THE CALL

Although Tangela sensed from an early age that there was something different about her life, she did not immediately understand that God was preparing her for ministry.

Through prayer, worship, and a deeper study of God’s Word, her calling became clearer.

MERGE: At what age did you realize you were called into ministry?

Tangela: From an early age, I always knew there was something different about me, but I didn’t fully understand what it was. It wasn’t until I was around 23 years old that I began to recognize God’s calling on my life.

As I matured and became more intentional about studying God’s Word, I realized that He had a unique purpose and plan for me. The more I sought Him through prayer, worship, and His Word, the more He revealed His will for my life. He began to open my eyes, strengthen my faith, and prepare me for the ministry He had called me to.

Looking back, I can see that God was guiding my steps all along. What I once viewed as simply being different was actually His hand shaping and preparing me for a life of serving Him and ministering to others.

A LEGACY OF GOSPEL MUSIC

Shortly after graduating from high school, Tangela founded her gospel group, Tan and The Violinetts. She ministered with the group for more than 30 years before joining her late father, Rev. John Wilkins, and her two sisters in continuing their family’s gospel music legacy.

Tangela also established Stop the Violence, a children’s choir that mentored and trained young people between the ages of six and eighteen. Through music, she helped build confidence, character, and faith in the next generation.

Her musical journey has included songwriting, arranging, producing, recording background vocals, and sharing the stage with respected gospel artists. She was also honored to provide background vocals on Rev. Al Green’s recording, I Found a Reason.

MERGE: What has your music career consisted of?

Tangela: My music career began at an early age. At 18 or 19 years old, I recorded my first record—a 45—with my family group, The Violinetts. That experience laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong ministry through music.

In 1988, I released my most recognized project, God Will Brighten Up My Darkest Night, a recording that blended traditional and contemporary gospel music. The title song resonated with audiences everywhere.

As I joined my father and family in ministry, I had the privilege of working alongside my father and his producers on two of his recording projects. Those experiences broadened my musical knowledge and allowed me to grow as both a vocalist and arranger.

In 1999, I released my second CD, A Change Is Coming My Way, another project that featured a blend of traditional and contemporary gospel music. Every song on the album was written and arranged by me, and I was honored to work with several well-known producers and musicians who helped bring the vision to life.

Throughout my career, I have recorded background vocals, co-arranged music, and collaborated with both gospel and secular artists. I have also been blessed to share the stage with some of gospel music’s most respected artists, including John P. Kee, The Williams Brothers, and Shirley Caesar.

It has been an honor to see how my music has touched lives, encouraged believers, and inspired fellow artists over the years.

After the passing of my husband in 2024, I found healing and renewed purpose through music. I returned to the recording studio to record the song I’ll Be Praying for You. What began as a personal expression of faith and encouragement became a testimony of God’s sustaining grace during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. The song reflects my commitment to continue ministering hope, healing, and the love of Christ through music.

MINISTRY BEYOND THE MICROPHONE

For Tangela, serving as a Worship Leader and Minister of Music involves much more than preparing songs and leading a congregation.

Her ministry is expressed through service. It is found in mentoring others, visiting the hospitalized, checking on senior members, offering prayer, providing encouragement, and being present for people during difficult seasons.

MERGE: What does your church ministry work look like?

Tangela: My role in the church is Worship Leader and Minister of Music. Although this role may appear one-dimensional, the responsibilities that come with it are far-reaching and deeply meaningful.

My passion has always been serving others because I believe that when I serve people, I am also serving God.

In addition to ensuring that the music department operates smoothly, I devote time to mentoring both church members and individuals within the community. I conduct wellness checks on senior members, visit those who are hospitalized, and provide encouragement and support during difficult times.

I also lead weekly prayer sessions for anyone in need and serve as a trusted resource for members who may be struggling financially, mentally, emotionally, or physically.

Whether offering guidance, prayer, or simply a listening ear, I strive to reflect the love and compassion of Christ in all that I do.

I love my role in the church and firmly believe that this is the calling God has placed upon my life. Through worship, service, and ministry, I seek to uplift others and help them grow in faith and hope.

FAITH, FAMILY, BUSINESS, AND BALANCE

As the owner of Longstreet Logistics LLC, Tangela carries the responsibilities of entrepreneurship alongside family, ministry, and music.

Her company is rooted in integrity, excellence, and perseverance. Her goal is not only to build a successful business, but also to create a legacy that will positively impact her children, grandchildren, and future generations.

For Tangela, managing these responsibilities begins with planning; but her greatest source of strength is time spent with God.

MERGE: As a businesswoman, mother, minister, and musician, how do you manage work-life balance?

Tangela: Trying to balance the many hats I wear as a business owner, mother, minister, and musician is not always easy. However, I have always been a planner, and that has helped me stay organized, avoid becoming overwhelmed, and effectively manage my day-to-day responsibilities.

My days typically begin at 6:00 a.m. and don’t end until it’s time to rest.

The first and most important part of my day is spending time with God. I know that each day brings challenges and distractions, and I rely on Him to give me the strength, wisdom, and direction I need. Starting my day in His presence prepares me to face whatever comes my way.

Procrastination has never been a struggle for me. In fact, time management is one of my greatest strengths. I believe that being intentional with my time allows me to fulfill my responsibilities with excellence while remaining present for my family, my ministry, my business, and my music.

One of the scriptures that keeps me grounded and motivated is Philippians 4:13:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

This verse reminds me that I am not juggling life’s demands alone. Through Christ, I receive the strength to accomplish everything He has called me to do.

PURPOSE BEYOND THE PRESENT

Tangela’s vision continues to expand.

In addition to music, ministry, and business, she has embraced writing and directing stage plays and aspires to one day bring her stories to the big screen.

Driven by personal experience and a heart for healing, she is also preparing to launch a nonprofit organization for individuals navigating grief. Her vision is to provide practical resources, customized coping strategies, and compassionate support that help people adjust to life’s changes, rediscover hope, and heal at their own pace.

Her personal losses have not diminished her faith. Instead, they have deepened her desire to encourage others and turn painful experiences into pathways of healing.
